LONGTIME SUNRISE PARTNER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT


Pete Smith Leaves Company After 27 Years

Pete Smith, CPM, who joined Sunrise Management with our current president Joe Greenblatt more than twenty seven years ago, recently announced his retirement.

A 40-year veteran of the property management industry, he served as president of Sunrise from 1989 through 2003 and most recently was our executive vice president.

Throughout his tenure, Sunrise experienced steady growth – evolving into a fully integrated real estate company with services including management, marketing and construction/project management. The firm currently has regional offices in Sacramento, Las Vegas and Phoenix, with more than 13,000 multifamily units throughout California and the Southwest.

According to Greenblatt, Smith has played a key role in the company’s growth. “In addition to helping oversee the evolution of the company, he has served as a role model and vital resource for our employees,” said Greenblatt. “His vision and commitment have been crucial to our expansion. We will miss Pete but at the same time, we are very happy for him and wish him the best as he begins a new life chapter.”

Smith’s experience is vast and his credentials are many. He is an experienced Court appointed Receiver and Property Management Expert Witness and has worked with a full gamut of assets, including new property lease-ups, senior housing, student housing, market rate housing, Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) and section 8 properties.

Prior to joining Sunrise, he worked for CDS Management Co., a division of The Sickels Group. During his tenure with CDS, he handled the successful lease-up of 6,000 apartment homes in a six state region. He participated in the formation of a management company, which grew to 10,000 residential units in only three years time.

He launched his career as a general manager of a student-housing complex at San Diego State University, working for Alan and O'Hara Management Co., a division of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance. He later joined Ankirk Management Co., and eventually became senior property manager there, handling a diverse portfolio of properties including apartments, industrial buildings and condominium associations.

A graduate of San Diego State University, he holds a California Bureau of Real Estate license and the designation of CERTIFIED PROPERTY MANAGER® (CPM®) from the Institute of Real Estate Management.

He has served on the board of directors and as vice president of the San Diego County Apartment Association as well as on the board of the California Apartment Association.
